Our Story
Welcome to our community - active on the UMN-Twin Cities campus since 1874. It is a privilege for us in the Office for Fraternity & Sorority Life to advocate for over 2,500 students who are members of one of our 46+ fraternities and sororities on campus. Membership in a fraternity or sorority is an experience unlike any other in college.
From our first fraternity (Chi Psi ΧΨ, 1874) and our first sorority (Kappa Kappa Gamma ΚΚΓ, 1880) to our First National Pan-Hellenic organization (Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. ΑΦΑ 1912), the University of Minnesota Fraternity and Sorority community has come a long way since our school was founded. We even have two organizations who were founded on our campus, Lambda Delta Phi (ΛΔΦ) in 1961 and Alpha Sigma Kappa - Women in Technical Studies (AΣK) in 1989.
Fraternity and Sorority members from our community have gone on to become University Presidents, Deans, and leaders of industry. Over 15 buildings on campus are named after them.

Testimonials
"I am a Spring 2022 initiate of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Mu Rho Chapter and my involvement in Fraternity and Sorority Life at the University of Minnesota has been an amazing experience ever since. For the first two years, I was the sole member of our chapter, but the Office for Fraternity and Sorority Life was incredibly supportive, keeping me in the loop and providing resources that I wouldn’t have otherwise known about. One of my favorite FSL memories has to be attending the AFLV Student Leadership Conference in Spring 2024. Even though I was the only NPHC member there, OFSL, and members from MGC, PHC, & IFC all made me feel so welcome; and we grew closer throughout the trip. I’m truly grateful that, even with my chapter being a smaller one, I was still able to build a strong sense of community with members from FSL. These are memories I will cherish forever."
Tobi Oshifeso - Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, inc.
"I joined a PHC sorority during the fall semester of my freshman year of college, and it has been one of the best decisions I’ve made since coming to college. Being a part of Greek Life has made the huge University of Minnesota campus feel like home and given me a community I know I can rely on. The friendships I have made through my sorority are ones where I know I can be my most genuine self - something I am grateful for every day. Additionally, my involvement in Greek Life has provided me the opportunity to pursue leadership both through my own chapter and through the Panhellenic council. These opportunities have helped me grow into a strong leader, expand my network of alumni connections, and develop valuable skills that I will carry with me throughout college and beyond."
Kristin Cullen - Pi Beta Phi
"Greek Life was always something I saw myself doing. My dad and uncle were both part of it, so I grew up hearing the stories and seeing how those friendships stuck with them. When I got to campus, I didn’t overthink it—I joined the same organization and never looked back. From the start, it felt like the right place. I found people I clicked with, people who pushed me to grow, and people I know I’ll stay close with long after college. Being part of this community has given me a sense of purpose and belonging that I don’t think I would’ve found anywhere else. FSL has shaped the way I show up as a leader, a friend, and a brother. It’s been one of the most meaningful parts of my college experience."
Noah Skaggs - Pi Kappa Alpha
"I came to college with no intention of joining Greek Life, as I wasn't into partying, and the fraternity stereotype pushed me away. But when one of my closest friends joined Lambda Phi Epsilon, I started to see a different side. I learned that Greek Life can be a welcoming, supportive, and diverse space, where people from different backgrounds come together to build genuine connections. I found that nuanced identities were not pushed away, but instead embraced.Through joining, I’ve met some of the most kind-hearted and driven people I’ve ever met-- people who create a space to defy norms of toxic masculinity and emphasize healthy expression of our emotions. As an out-of-state student, adjusting to life here was challenging at first, but through Lambdas and the FSL community, I found the people who helped me learn more about the Twin Cities, and make this the place I call home today. Being part of Greek Life has shaped who I am today, and I’m grateful that I took the leap."
