Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life

History

Our community dates to 1874 and is a significant string in the fabric of our institution.

Notable firsts include:

  • Chi Psi (ΧΨ) was the first fraternity to be charted at the U of M in 1874.
  • Kappa Kappa Gamma (ΚΚΓ) is the first chartered sorority in 1880
  • Our National Pan-Hellenic Council fraternities and sororities also are among the oldest in the United States; Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. (ΑΦΑ), was the first chartered on campus in 1912
  • Two sororities were founded here - Lambda Delta Phi (ΛΔΦ) in 1961 and Alpha Sigma Kappa - Women in Technical Studies (AΣK) in 1989

Former University Presidents, Deans and leaders of industry are among the alumni of our fraternity and sorority community and over 15 buildings on campus bear their names.
